Before you can really understand how muscle strains can cause a lot of back it's important to understand what muscles actually do.

You probably already know that muscles move different parts of your body when you are exercising and moving around.  But this is just one of their jobs.

Another important thing that your muscles do is to balance out the tension and pressure that moving around puts on your joints.

So, when your muscles are strained, tight, or weak, trying to move normally is hard because the muscles are stiff and don't stretch the way they are supposed to.

For instance, some people have a lot of pain when they are trying to stand up from sitting in a chair. This kind of pain is usually caused by  a couple of particular tight muscles that pull against their backs.  It can make trying to stand up straight a struggle.

Most of us don't realize that everyday activities (or, inactivities) actually can cause many muscles to become short and tight.  Activities like sitting for prolonged periods of time can lead to several combinations of weak and tight muscles that set us up for muscle strains.

Think about this for a moment…how much time do you spend sitting on a daily basis? On the commute to work? Do you sit at work? Do you sit for lunch? What do you do when you get home?

This is one reason why some people can figure out what they've done that can actually be causing their back pain. Many times back pain is caused by totally innocent things. But these innocent activities can lead to tight, weak muscles that set us up for muscle strains.

After working with a lot of different patients, there seems to be 5 or so major muscles that contribute to causing lower back pain. These muscles are generally located in the legs, hips, and low back.

One good thing about knowing which muscles may be causing your back pain is that they also respond very well to specific exercises that will stretch them and reduce the muscle strains.

This means that by learning specific exercises you can relieve muscle strains and decrease, or get rid of, your back pain.  Once the pain is gone, there will be no more need for pain pills or muscle relaxers.
